Thomas J. Gerard

Tom joined Marshall Dennehey in 1997 and has considerable experience defending and trying cases in the areas of premises liability, motor vehicle, products liability, torts, professional liability and law enforcement. He currently handles major litigation for large and small clients in all of these areas in both Delaware and Maryland. As a member of the SIU practice group, he handles fraud litigation and medical provider investigations also in Maryland and Delaware.

Tom has tried cases in the Federal District Court as well as all of Delaware’s State Courts. He has handled hundreds of administrative hearings before various State Boards. Tom has also successfully tried cases in Maryland’s District and Circuit Courts.

Tom is a graduate of C.W. Post College. He moved to Delaware in 1980 from New York where he grew up. Prior to beginning law school in 1987, he was a police officer in New Castle, Delaware. He worked as a detective, investigating a full range of cases from property crimes to homicides, and developed interview and investigative skills and techniques that have proven valuable as an attorney.

While a student at Widener University School of Law, Tom worked for the Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control where he drafted water pollution regulations. Upon graduation from Widener, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Henry Du Pont Ridgely, President Judge, and the Honorable Myron T. Steele in the Superior Court. He received the Wapner Neuman Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Oral Advocacy and for his participation in Clinical Programs.   He went on to teach Trial Advocacy and Advanced Trial Advocacy Courses. 

Tom is an active member of his community. He is a volunteer firefighter with over 29 years of active service; was a water rescue instructor with the Delaware State Fire School and the Department of Natural Resources; and is an amateur radio operator involved in emergency communications, having coordinated the activities of the Hurricane Watch Net’s response to Hurricane Sandy.

Tom formerly held a US Coast Guard Captain's License and remains an avid boater, teaching boating classes and water rescue. As an avid scuba diver, Tom ran the New Castle County Dive Team for a number of years.
