Director of Human Resources - 10+ Yrs Experience - Philadelphia, PA

The law offices of Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin is seeking a Director of Human Resources, a full time position in its Center City Philadelphia office.

This job is in compliance with Philadelphia's Fair Chance Hiring Law.


Organizes and coordinates all phases of Human Resources activities for personnel firm-wide, including employment, recruitment, compensation, benefits, payroll, policies and employee services.  This is an exempt position that reports to the Chief Operating Officer (COO).


  • Annually reviews and makes recommendations to executive management and COO for improvement of the firm’s policies, procedures and practices on personnel matters
  • Maintains knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation and ensures firm’s compliance
  • Maintains responsibility for firm compliance with federal, state and local legislation pertaining to all personnel matters
  • Communicates changes in the firm’s personnel policies and procedures and ensures that proper compliance is followed
  • Coordinates or conducts exit interviews to determine reasons behind separations
  • Consults with legal counsel as appropriate, or as directed by the CEO or COO on personnel matters
  • Coaches branch office managers to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities on personnel matters
  • Conducts wage and salary surveys and analysis and participates in salary committee activities to determine competitive compensation plan. 
  • Liaison to Executive Committee and Practice Group Managers for year end evaluation process and compensation history.
  • Negotiates recruiting contracts. 
  • Supervises the staff of the human resources department.
  • Participates on committees and special projects.


Supervisory Responsibility

  • Administration of the health, welfare and retirement plans
  • Administration of In-house COBRA and FMLA
  • Preparation of insurance renewal applications
  • Recruiting an onboarding processes
  • Payroll process and delivery
  • Administration of HRIS/Benefit and Report systems
  • Filing of unemployment and workers’ compensation claims 
  • Charitable event campaign



  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of Human Resources Administration and management.
  • Minimum JD; or Bachelor's Degree with equivalent work experience in Human Resources Administration and SHRM Certification.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to respond to the most sensitive and confidential issues.  Must possess sound logical thinking and judgment skills. 
  • Ability to communicate with senior management and to establish good working relationships with other management staff, employees and outside vendors. 
  • Excellent communication skills in oral, written, and electronic form. 
  • Must be available to work more than 40 hours per week, including weekends, when necessary.



  • 10+ years' management and supervisory experience in a law firm environment.
